This amazing documentary, How I Became a Poet, takes us into the life of Poet Dadisi, born Marvin Leroy Alston, revealing his inability to read as a child. Psychiatrists refer to this problem as dyslexia, but teachers simply call children with this problem slow learners who are often laughed at by other children and placed in special education classes. Nevertheless, Dadisi desperately wanted to be a writer even though he could not pronounce many of the words he wrote in his notebooks. His determination was so strong that his reading ability gradually improved. Once out of high school, his frustration and pain led him to begin writing poetry. Dadisi has since published seven books and two CDs. In addition, he was the recipient of the William Shakespeare Trophy of Excellence and was also named Poet of the Year in 2002 by the National Poetry Society in Orlando, Florida. In 1994, he won a two-week, all expense-paid trip to Senegal and Gambia, West Africa, sponsored by McDonald's Restaurant. He has also traveled to Egypt, Canada, Jamaica, the Bahamas, and US Virgin Islands. The Dadisi story is one of victory over obstacles and serves as an inspiration to all who have faced similar problems and conquered them.
